Macular Degeneration Vitamins

If you are interested in treatment for macular degeneration, know that some vitamins have been found to reduce or at least slow the damage caused by this eye disorder. Fortunately, macular degeneration vitamins are quite easy to find, and though ongoing studies are still researching this claim, some supplements have been known to even reverse vision loss. Either way, finding out more about macular degeneration vitamins is a good idea if you want to start treating this condition.

Lutein

One of the best macular degeneration vitamins to take includes lutein, which is an antioxidant. This substance tends to collect in the macula, where it can help protect the eye from free radicals brought on by blue light. This kind of light is rampant both indoors and outdoors, and if the eyes are exposed for long, they may become damaged over time, resulting in central vision loss.

Having lots of lutein in your system can reduce the chances of this occurring, helping to guard against the slow vision loss brought on by macular degeneration. In some cases, it may even stop or reverse previous vision loss. This substance is found in leafy green vegetables, egg yolks, and a variety of brightly colored vegetables and fruits. However, if you do not want to eat these on a regular basis, you can get lutein as a supplement. Lutein can be found in macular degeneration vitamins that are made just for this purpose, as well as in multivitamins or even by itself in tablet form.

Other Macular Degeneration Vitamins

There are other vitamins that have been known to help protect against the damages caused by macular degeneration, as well. For example, zinc and vitamins A,C, and E also help slow vision loss, and can stop or slow the progression from intermediate macular degeneration to the advanced stage. You can often find these vitamins together in one multivitamin tablet, frequently with the addition of copper to prevent a type of anemia that is common with high doses of zinc. These macular degeneration vitamins are not meant to reverse the effects of this eye condition, but they may prevent further loss of central vision.
